During an initial day in office, Zohran Mamdani committed to “reimagine” New York City, declaring “a different age” and an ambitious beginning to his term.

A Groundbreaking Leader

The new figure, who just a year ago remained a virtually unknown state assemblyman, has become the city's first Muslim mayor. He also made history by being the inaugural to be take the oath of office using the Islamic holy text.

“A time such as this is rare and rarer still is it that the public whose grasp the levers of change,” Mamdani stated.

A Costly Policy Agenda

Mamdani now undertakes one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a agenda including:

• No-cost bus transit
• A cap on rents for about 1 million households
• A trial program of municipally-operated grocery stores

The projected $10 billion price tag of these initiatives may prove difficult to fund. Mamdani has vowed to raise taxes on the wealthiest New Yorkers and corporations. However, as a municipality subject to the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.

As his term begins, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Queens apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a unusual warning about a supposed resident spirit in the home, which reportedly only haunts those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his address with a simple declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
